Most frizzens today are made of 6150 steel which is an oil hardening steel, however it will never get hard enough with an oil quench, so you need to use water. The weak link seems to be the flint locks they come with (both makers). they are mostly good/very good but are often very, very bad.Here is how to do that. Cut the slot just deep enough so the bottom of the base of the lug can be flat and fit on a flat surface on the barrel. So make the flat on the barrel just wide enough for the base of the lug and no more. Then file in the dovetails on the barrel and angle the ends of the lug base to match.The .36 will hold up better in a breeze and will give you about 25 yards more range. For squirrel hunting, I like the .32 for when the leaves are still on the trees and shots are usually inside of 35 yards. I switch to a .36 after the leaves drop cause the shots tend to be longer and I also combine squirrel hunting with coyote calling.They are all Pedersolis, much to my pleasure, and are 1)a 50cal Pennsylvania long rifle, 2) a double SxS 12ga percussion shotgun and 3) a .62cal/20ga Indian Trade Musket.
